Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is recognized by many clinicians as being at the cutting edge of psychological therapy due to the wealth of empirical research undertaken.

This effective and active-directive process is based on the philosophy that people are not 'disturbed' by events but by the view they hold about those events. It aims to treat a variety of emotional and psychosomatic conditions.

CBT places emphasis on the present, on currently-held attitudes, painful emotions, and maladaptive dysfunctional behaviours. It teaches people how to implement healthy and realistic alternatives to current problematic psychological patterns.

CBT is a therapeutic approach that can help resolve emotional and behavioural disturbances in ourselves by working with our physical sensory, cognitive/thought and behavioural responses to internal and external events. We all hold values and beliefs about ourselves. We all hold values and beliefs about other people and the world. We are all active and creative in constructing our own reality. There is a reciprocal relationship between our thoughts and our emotions.

CBT works by limiting faulty beliefs that we gather from our negative experiences. These negative harmful experiences drive our behaviour to either sabotage our efforts, send us off in the wrong direction, or make us fearful of changing and trying something new. CBT allows analysis into what causes those problems and focuses on the positive improvement and outcomes.
